Cologne's Christmas market in 2026: the cathedral, the old town, and how to do it right

Overview

Cologne does not have one Christmas market but more than a dozen, and three of them, in the center and within walking distance of one another, are the ones most visitors mean.

The market at the cathedral fills Roncalliplatz, the square at the foot of Cologne Cathedral’s south side, with more than 120 stalls under a canopy of about 50,000 lights strung from a coastal fir some 25 meters tall. It is the one with the cathedral’s two spires standing over the roofs of its stalls. This year it is a little smaller: the operators told the Catholic broadcaster Domradio in October that the market will be “somewhat more compact” and do with fewer stalls, because of the building work around the cathedral, though its layout stays the same.

Heinzels Wintermärchen, in the old town on Heumarkt and Alter Markt, is themed on the Heinzelmännchen, the house elves of Cologne legend who did the townspeople’s work at night; its organizers call it the city’s largest market, and it has an ice rink on Heumarkt. Markt der Engel, on Neumarkt, is the market of angels, with costumed figures among its lanes and a canopy of stars over them.

Beyond those three are smaller markets with their own character: a market along the harbor at Rheinauhafen, the Nikolausdorf on Rudolfplatz, and one in the Stadtgarten park.

When it runs

The three big markets keep different dates, and the differences matter after Christmas.

The cathedral market runs from 16 November to 23 December 2026, the operators say:

  • Sunday to Wednesday: 11:00 to 21:00
  • Thursday and Friday: 11:00 to 22:00
  • Saturday: 10:00 to 22:00.

It is closed on Sunday 22 November, Totensonntag, the Protestant day of remembrance for the dead, and so is Markt der Engel.

Markt der Engel also runs from 16 November to 23 December: 11:00 to 21:00 from Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 to 22:00 on Friday and Saturday, with its mulled-wine stalls open an hour longer, and it closes at 21:00 on 23 December.

Heinzels Wintermärchen opens a week later and runs longest: from 23 November, daily from 11:00 to 22:00, closed on 24 and 25 December, and from 11:00 to 21:00 from 31 December. Its Alter Markt half closes on 23 December; the Heumarkt half, with the ice rink, stays open until 10 January 2027.

So between Christmas and New Year it is the old town that is still running, with the harbor market at Rheinauhafen, which is open until 3 January. The cathedral market is gone by then.

Local tip: the cathedral market opens a week before Heinzels Wintermärchen. If you come in the week of 16 November, you will find the cathedral and Neumarkt markets open and the old town’s market not yet.

What to eat and drink

The drink is Glühwein, mulled wine, at every market. At the cathedral, the operators say they have offered organic food and drink since 2010 and that the organic share is now well over 90 percent, and the city’s own portal names three things sold there: Cologne-style spiced spekulatius biscuits, Domlikör, the cathedral liqueur, and the Wimmeltasse, a mug you can buy only at this market. At Markt der Engel the cups and glasses are all reusable; there are no single-use ones.

For a proper meal rather than a stall, the city’s food pages cover three of Cologne’s own dishes: halve hahn, himmel un ääd and sauerbraten.

Getting there

The cathedral market is next to the main station, Köln Hauptbahnhof, and the Stadtbahn stop for both is Dom/Hauptbahnhof, served by lines 5, 16 and 18.

Next to it is not quite the same as straight across, this winter. The north side of the cathedral square, the Domplatte, is being rebuilt until January 2028, and Domradio reported in October that there is currently no direct route between the cathedral and the station. The city signposts two ways round: from the station along Trankgasse toward Hohe Straße, or from the cathedral steps, the Domtreppe, round the east side of the cathedral and past the Römisch-Germanisches Museum to Roncalliplatz. Allow a few minutes more than the map says.

From the cathedral, Heumarkt and Neumarkt are both within walking distance through the old town and the shopping streets, and both have Stadtbahn stops of their own name. Do not drive in: Cologne’s guide explains why, and the car park under the cathedral square has been running at reduced capacity since damage was found in its columns.

Practicalities

Going inside the cathedral now costs money. Since 1 July 2026 a sightseeing visit costs €12, or €6 reduced, and children up to and including 13 go free. Services stay free, and outside service times the north transept is open for prayer and for lighting a candle. Tickets are sold online and at the cathedral’s ticket office on Roncalliplatz, the market’s square.

The markets stand on public squares; the ice rink at Heinzels Wintermärchen is ticketed.

Carry some cash. None of the three organizers says whether every stall takes cards.

Book a room early for an Advent weekend; Cologne’s guide covers which district to stay in.
