Bruges' Christmas market in 2026: the Markt, Simon Stevinplein, and how to do it right
Last updated 18 October 2026
Overview
Bruges’ Christmas markets are two, a few minutes apart, and both sit in the old center the whole city is famous for. The larger is on the Markt, the main square, under the Belfry and the painted gabled fronts that face it; the smaller is on Simon Stevinplein, a short walk south. Since the city wrapped its winter program into a festival called Wintergloed, “Winter Glow”, the markets have been redesigned in its style, and the festival now carries on long after the stalls close.
The markets are what most visitors come for, but in 2026 the rest of Wintergloed is worth planning around too: an ice rink in Koning Albert I-park near the Minnewater, a covered winter bar beside it, and at the very end of January a Winter Giant, a new figure built for the city by a French street-theater company and paraded through the streets on 30 and 31 January 2027.
When it runs
The two markets are open from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, according to the city’s tourist office:
- Sunday to Thursday: 11:00 to 22:00
- Friday and Saturday: 11:00 to 23:30
- New Year’s Eve: open until 03:00.
Those late hours are the markets’ particular gift: on a weekend night the squares are still open until half past eleven.
Wintergloed as a whole runs on from 20 November 2026 to 31 January 2027, so a January visit still finds the lights, the winter events and the giant, though not the market stalls.
Local tip: if you can, stay the night rather than coming for the day: the markets are open late, and the old center after dark is the Bruges people come for.
What to eat and drink
The tourist office promises “gifts and winter treats” and publishes no list of what the stalls sell, so this page does not guess at one. For a Flemish meal rather than a market snack, Bruges’ food pages say what to order.
The covered winter bar, IJsgloed, stands beside the ice rink in Koning Albert I-park and runs over the same weeks as the markets; it is the place to warm up if you are skating, or watching someone else skate.
Getting there
The Markt is about twenty minutes on foot from Brugge station, through the old center. If you would rather not walk, De Lijn buses run from the station to the center every few minutes; lines 1 and 2 both go, and a single ticket costs €3 and is valid for sixty minutes, the tourist office says.
Once you are in the old center, both markets and the rink are within a short walk of each other.
Practicalities
The ice rink in Koning Albert I-park is open from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, from 10:00 to 22:00, closing at 17:30 on 24 and 31 December and opening at noon on 25 December and 1 January. It costs €9, children under three skate free, and it takes Bancontact, Payconiq or cash, a list without credit cards, so carry cash for it.
Entry to the markets is free. The tourist office does not say whether every stall takes cards, so the same advice applies: have some cash.
Book a room early if you want to stay inside the old center in December. For crafts rather than food, the Handmade in Brugge MAKERSmarkt fills the City Halls from 18 to 20 December.
